How It Got Started...  by the Founder

I retired from public administration after more than twenty-five years and now work with students. I am tutoring and mentoring students in math, reading and language arts. Also, assisting parents in working with students at home. My first degree was in education.

I am writing on this website and a blog to provide insight into some common health problems. As a veteran, I was treated during the time there was much said about the VA Hospitals and Clinics, and their poor performance in 2008-2011.
When I retired I no longer had medical insurance and was at the discretion of the VA medical system and doctors. I was having some problems with joint pain, low energy and problem sleeping. They prescribed pain pills, muscle relaxers,antidepressants, sleeping pills, etc. None of which addressed my problems, only the symptoms.

I spent 2-3 years taking these medications and not getting better. The time seems like a blur. I finally decided to do some research on my own to get to the source of my problems. I found that most of my physical issues stemmed from low testosterone and hypothyroidism. Both are some universal problems for aging Americans, but the doctors have to be trained to detect the issues.

I was even on disability at this time, and remained on disability for 3 years. I subsequently started to receive medicare, and started seeing a private physician. I immediately asked him to test for low testosterone and under-active thyroid. I had to provide him with a list of the tests required to adequately determine if these contributed to my long-time issues.

When the test results came back they determined both problems existed and I was referred to specialists for further testing. The specialists got me started on prescriptions to address the problems, but it seemed the problems were not getting better soon. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

FHF has made our mission to service the families and residents of Northwest Indiana and integrating an operating style that accomplishes that end. Of course, I believe deeply in what we are doing at FHF as its founder, but I offer that this will evolve has we develop as a non-profit. 

FHF shall update its mission and goals every few years fas we develop and build on our service area. Keeping in mind that with the caveat that our choices are based on the determined needs/health issues in our area may not necessarily be the right ones for others. We feel we have a unique perspective on how to address area health concerns.

FHF feels each foundation and non-profit organization has a different set of opportunities by virtue of its history and donor intent, its size, geographic location, the character of its board, staff leadership, and other factors. I have always believed that our society is best served by having foundations that do different things. Organizations also evolve and change (and should). 

FHF began as a private foundation, but plan to pursue public and private dollars to enhance our abilities to better service families in Northwest Indiana, and expand our service delivery to greater numbers. 

Ultimately, we may shift mission to include charity, a change which signals no shift in mission or operations but gives us a status which more accurately reflects how we approach our mission today.
